Where to look for work and training

Be as wide ranging as you can be when you look for work - don't just concentrate on local newspapers for instance.

It's good to 'network' - this means letting everyone you know and meet that you're looking for work, and attending seminars and job exhibitions.

Speak to the Youth Support Service

  • They may have details of vacancies from employers who are willing to give young people a chance - most of these positions will be entry level with routine work. Check our our Jobseekers Guide publication for more information.

Job Centre Plus offices

  • A wide range of jobs are available - most will require experience
  • You can search for vacancies advertised in Job Centre Plus offices online on the Directgov site

Recruitment Agencies

  • These are private organisations which are paid by companies to find suitable employees - some employers only advertise through agencies
  • As well as their office base, many have websites which list vacancies

Newspapers and magazines

  • Specialist inserts/supplements covering a range of work areas are produced by some newspapers - they are a good way to find out what's happening in particular job sectors
  • If you have job-related qualifications, find out if there are specialist publications that might be useful - large newsagents may be able to tell you what's available

Internet

  • Vacancies and training schemes may be on an employer's website - sometimes there is a separate 'corporate' website where vacancies and other careers-related facts are listed
  • There are plenty of online recruitment sites which can have details of 1000s of jobs. Make sure that any websites you visit are official and secure to protect your personal data
