Interviews

If you have an interview coming up, well done, but there's still a lot of work to do.

If you are finding it hard to get an interview, the reasons might be: not enough experience, too few qualifications, too much competition - or you may need to improve your CV and application techniques.

Telephone interviews

Telephone interviews should be taken as seriously as face-to-face ones. Take notes, speak clearly and listen to the questions. Have a copy of any CVs, application forms etc. close by just in case you are called out of the blue.

Once you have an interview...

Make sure you let the employer know you will be attending.

Preparation

  • Read everything you've been sent and research the organisation on the internet
  • Plan how you will answer the questions. Employers like to hear examples
  • Check that you know how to get there - print out a map and look at the route

Answering the questions

  • Give honest answers and be tactful
  • Try to let your enthusiasm come across so that the employer is clear that you are willing to work hard
  • Some questions can be a bit confusing so ask if you don't understand anything
  • Look at the interviewer/s - but don't make them feel uneasy by staring

Possible questions

Tell me about yourself

Employers don't want to hear your life story but tell them about school, volunteering, other work you might have done or any other achievements you're proud of

Give me an example of how you handled a problem in your last job/school/college

Employers want to know that you can learn from past mistakes, or that you can work well under pressure

What makes you the best person for this job OR why have you applied for this job?

Give examples of your achievements and why you're suited to the position.

Things to remember

  • Arrive on time
  • Be friendly and polite to everyone you meet, not just the interviewer/s
  • Don't assume that the interviewer/s will remember everything you wrote in your CV or application form

What might happen?

  • A job offer
  • A refusal - always ask for feedback, if possible
  • ...or a follow up interview
