Employment Rights
When you start work or training you have certain legal rights when it comes to things like equal opportunities, getting paid and how much holiday time you'll receive.
Don't forget that you too have a part to play. It might not be a legal requirement but employers have a right to expect certain things - anything from taking your holiday entitlement at certain times of the year to not using the Internet for personal use.
Pay
- Find out when and how often you get paid (will you get paid if you're off sick?)
- You must be given a detailed written paid statement whenever you are paid, showing exactly what you are being paid and what is being taken for tax and National Insurance
The contract
- You might receive a contract of employment that covers issues like pay, hours of work and holiday entitlement. Make sure you understand and agree with it before you sign it.
- Legally you don't have to be given a contract but you're entitled to a written statement covering the main terms and conditions of your employment
Health and safety
- Your employer is legally obliged to look after everyone's health and safety at work. This can include anything from providing the right sort of computer equipment in order to prevent back problems to making sure the office is tidy so you don't trip up (you need to play a part in this as well)
Equal Opportunities
- In most cases the law protects you from discrimination. If you encounter any problems at work it's a good idea to try and sort them out as soon as possible.
Working hours
- There are laws covering working hours, rest periods and annual leave - for instance, the right to work no more than 48 hours per week (on average), or 40 if you are 16/17
When you start work, find out who your immediate manager or team leader is and who to go to if you have any problems or queries.
