Apprenticeships
Some facts about Apprenticeships
- Thousands of employers are involved in apprenticeships in England
- Various organisations offer apprenticeships - from well known companies and large councils to small individual companies
- There are three levels of apprenticeship: Intermediate, Advanced and Higher - this last one is relatively new so may be limited to a small number and in only a few work areas
- Entry requirements depend on the level of apprenticeship and on the individual company/organisation - some want 4/5 GCSEs at A* - C grades and in specific subjects
- They vary in length depending on the level, work area and employer but are usually at least 12 months
Even if you have the entry requirements, you'll still need to have an interview / take tests to see if you are the most suitable candidate for the position.
What you could gain from an apprenticeship
- Qualifications like NVQs or BTECs - training for these could take place in work, at college or at a specialist training organisation
- Plenty of work experience
- Personal and work related skills which will be helpful when applying for future roles
Other training
Your Youth Support Service may be able to tell you what's available locally and provide information on applying. Under Foundation Learning, for instance, you could have the opportunity to take short work placements plus have the chance to gain and improve work related and personal skills.
Don't forget to ask employers about what training they offer when you have a job interview.
