Work and Training

Before you start looking for work, you need to know what you'd like to do - and whether or not it's something that's realistic.

Essentials

  • Most schools and Youth Support Centres have careers programmes which are accessible via a computer - these can give you an idea about what jobs might suit you based on a range of questions you have answeredY
  • Think about how far you are willing to travel and the minimum salary you would need
  • For information on lots of jobs (including what the work would involve and the typical entry requirements) see the careers profiles on Next Step

Until you have plenty of experience, you may have to accept something that isn't necessarily your first choice.

Ask yourself, do you want a job which:

  • involves working with the public?
  • is glamorous?
  • is creative?
  • involves working outdoors?
  • pays a high salary?
  • is well respected by society?
  • involves caring for people?

Then think about the reality behind the statements - for instance a 'glamorous job' might involve a lot of hard work behind the scenes and be very competitive.

Things to consider when looking for work or training

  • Start your planning in advance
  • There could be lots of competition for a position but YOU might be the candidate they're looking for
  • If you are offered a job and are unsure, talk it through with someone - but don't leave the employer hanging on
  • If you lack experience or the relevant work or personal skills, volunteering could be helpful - see our Volunteering information
  • Work and training opportunities vary depending on where you live. Careers staff, at school or Youth Support Centres, can often give you an idea on the main work sectors/opportunities that might be available locally.
