Keeping Safe
From all the reports in the media it's quite easy to think that there's danger at every turn.
In fact, the chances of being affected by crime are slim although it is true that some areas and some situations are more dangerous than others.
Here are some ways to keep safe:
When out with your friends
- Alcohol can cloud your judgement
- Decide who will look after your possessions
- If you're very noisy, that could attract unwanted attention
- Avoid confrontation with other groups
By yourself
- Act confidently, but not aggressively.
- Know your route including what transport is available
- Make sure someone knows where you're going and what time you expect to arrive.
- You might want to learn basic self-defence. However, the usual advice is to run away from a dangerous situation.
Transport
- If you're out driving with friends, remember that in the first year after passing the driving test, accidents are much more common .
- To keep safe on public transport at night, store your money out of site, try not to fall asleep and don't be afraid to move your seat
Money and possessions
- Think about the safest place to carry or store valuables
- Sometimes, it's helpful to split up the items and perhaps carry a spare note in your shoe for emergencies!
- If someone is threatening you, hand over the item.
- When withdrawing money from a cash machine, consider who's nearby.
Online
- Beware of revealing too many personal details
- If you have any doubts about who you're communicating with online, tell a trustworthy adult
- When buying things online, ensure the site is safe
- If you start getting odd emails, delete them - ideally without opening.
