Forced Marriage
All major religions (such as Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, Islam and Sikhism) condemn forced marriage, which is where one or both of the partners is made to marry against their will.
Forced marriage is not the same as an arranged marriage. In an arranged marriage, a person (such as a relative or a matchmaking expert) might try to put together a couple BUT it is up to the individuals to agree with the arrangement.
Forced marriage and the law
- The Forced Marriage Unit takes the issue very seriously and can offer advice if you are worried for yourself or someone you know. Contact them by telephone - whatever you say will be confidential. The number is: 020 7008 0151 (open Monday to Friday only, between the hours of 9 to 5).
How people 'defend' forced marriages
- protecting the family 'honour'
- stopping unsuitable relationships
- helping someone gain residence in the UK
- strengthening ties with family members
- honouring religious ideals
What to do if you're worried
- Before you go on a family visit abroad, make sure someone trustworthy knows where you're going, when you expect to be back, your passport details, etc. You should also phone the Forced Marriage Unit before you go.
- If you intend to leave home, try to work out beforehand who you can stay with, what money you'll need and so on.
- If you're feeling under great pressure, contact the Samaritans for emotional support (08457 909090). Other organisations, such as Childline (0800 1111) can also offer support.
- Whatever your age, gender, background or experience, it can be frightening if you are being forced to do something against your will - there are people who can offer help and advice, but you need to take the first step and let someone know the situation.
