Self Esteem
Some people seem naturally confident and aware of their own strengths and abilities.
Experts aren't really sure if this positive self-esteem is something that you just happen to be born with (if you're lucky), or not. However, most agree that we can all work on improving our self-image and confidence throughout our life.
Why a positive sense of self is important
- To stop you succumbing to peer pressure or pressure from the media (to act or behave in a certain way, for instance)
- To be able to accept criticism - helpful or otherwise - from an employer, teacher, family member or friend
- To help you deal with challenges that life might throw at you
What to do if you feel you need to improve your levels of self esteem
- First of all remember that feelings of self worth might vary throughout our lives
- Set yourself challenges and try new things
- Try not to compare yourself with others - few people are as perfect as you might think
- Think about who your friends are, and whether they help boost your self-esteem or are negative influences
- Realise that you can't be good at everything and that it's okay to make mistakes or fail
What to do if the problem becomes more serious
If you're thinking about harming yourself, or feel constantly sad, then talking to a sympathetic adult could be a good first step. There are a number of charities that offer advice and information, such as Mind (infoline: 0300 123 3393).
