FE Financial Help

A range of financial help may be available but it does depend on your individual circumstances.

The 16-19 Bursary

The Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) scheme has now closed. Its replacement is the 16-19 bursary which pays £1200 a year to students most in need of financial assistance. This could include you if, for instance, you are receiving Income Support or have recently left care. Other students may also be entitled to money but it is up to individual schools and colleges how they distribute it.

Please note: if you currently receive the EMA, you may continue to get it for a while longer, depending on your circumstances:

  • If you first applied for EMA in 2009/10, you will receive the same weekly payment until the end of the 2011/12 academic year
  • If you first applied for EMA in 2010/11 and are receiving the maximum amount, this will be reduced to £20 a week for the 2011/12 academic year
  • More information is on the Directgov site (16-19 Bursary) or see the YPLA's Guide for Parents and Young People.

Dance and Drama Awards

  • Some private dance and drama schools offer these. There are various requirements - for instance, for dance courses you need to be 16+ but for acting courses you need to be 18+ to be eligible. You also need to demonstrate lots of talent.
  • For a list of eligible places and for more information visit the Directgov site (Dance and Drama Awards)

Childcare costs

  • If you have a child and are under 20 you may be eligible for funds from Care to Learn to enable you to continue studying
  • Up to £160 a week is available to help with the costs of child care and transport
  • More information is available from Directgov (Care to Learn)

Other help

  • Schools and colleges may have other funds available to help hard up students
  • Private schools and colleges might fund part of your course fees if you are exceptional
  • Your parents/carers will usually still receive Child Benefit and Child Tax Credit, if eligible
  • Sometimes the local council/ authority will assist with the cost of travel
  • Download our Forward publication for information about funding if you have special and additional needs
