Further Education
Further education can take place in a school, college or a sixth form centre/college.
Possible reasons for going into further education
- Develop academic and other skills
- Enjoy studying
- Learn a new skill
- Meet a wide range of people
- New environment
- A challenge
- Necessary for career intentions
If you're getting pressure to stay in education after year 11 contact the Youth Support Team for advice on all your options.
What if I have a Statement of SEN?
Students with a Statement of SEN should be discussing Further Education as part of your Transition Planning.
There may be an opportunity for you to link to a college during Year 11 so you can get a feel for what it would be like before going full time.
More info in Forward and on Gloucestershire's Transition Pathway.
Does it matter what you study?
You might need to take particular courses or subjects because of your future plans - some higher education courses have strict entry requirements but many don't. For work, employers are often more interested in social skills, IT ability and general aptitude rather than the courses you studied right after year 11.
Visit UCAS Progress for information on what courses are available to you in Year 12.
What next?
- Find out if specific qualifications are needed for any career/higher education ideas you have. For information on entry requirements for various occupations, see the job profiles on our World of Work website or on Next Step
- Look at the college/school prospectus (or website) for details of the courses offered and facilities provided
- have a look at Open Days which may help you think more about where you want to go
